Time-Tested Stewardship

Many nations have contributed to the long and proud record of exploration, stewardship and research in Antarctica. For its part, New Zealand has been conducting world-leading science from Scott Base for over half a century with projects as diverse as paleo-climate drilling, bio-diversity in the Ross Sea and southern fisheries, and a vast array of long-term atmospheric and environmental research.

The unique environmental preservation and neutrality philosophy, shared by all nations involved in Antarctica, also sits very comfortably with the way New Zealand looks at, and operates in the world. It is these credentials and the unique insight provided by the Ross Sea Sector that make New Zealand a natural home for a pre-eminent, international institute focused on understanding this remarkable continent.
